The Greek National Satellite Space Project

Scope

The Greek National Satellite Space Project (GNSSP) represents a transformative national initiative to strengthen Greece’s autonomous space capabilities, enhance European resilience, and deliver operational Earth Observation (EO) services supporting both governmental and commercial needs. Funded through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) and implemented via the European Space Agency (ESA), this €200 million programme positions Greece among the key contributors to Europe’s new space ecosystem.

Under the coordination of the European Space Agency (ESA), the Ministry of Digital Governance (MoDG) and the Hellenic Space Center (HSC), the GNSSP encompasses the full space value chain, from satellite design and assembly, to launch operations and downstream services. Its primary goal is to establish national capacity, promote innovation, and ensure long-term access to Earth Observation data critical for decision-making in agriculture, forest, water resources, land environment, and national safety and security. The program is being developed by 57 partner entities, 50 of which are Greek.

In this context, this special session aims to host contributions that will both concisely and specifically present and assess various aspects of the project.

List of topics

  • Earth Observation Constellation: Development, launch, and operation of Thermal, SAR, and Optical sensor satellites
  • Downstream Services & Governmental Hub: The Governmental Earth Observation Hub, a centralized digital infrastructure in Greece’s capital, Athens, that will ingest data from the Greek Satellites and also host five, added-value thematic services for mapping and monitoring at country scale, under the following umbrella topics: Agriculture, Forest, Water, Land, and Safety & Security
  • Greek CubeSat In-Orbit Validation (IoV): Development, launch, and operation of IoV
    Cube satellites
  • Ground Segment Infrastructure: Networks of cutting-edge national facilities ensuring
autonomous satellite operations and data reception
  • Overall Impact and Benefits for Greece and its Citizens: Assessment of the economic,
societal, and strategic benefits for the country and its citizens
